My name is Keiran Molaeb, and my practice currently is a reflection on the distance felt from my family’s home country as a queer Lebanese-Australian, and the ways artmaking is used as a method of connecting with and reclaiming personal cultural identity. Informed by my family’s oral histories and nostalgic memories of place, I consider my relationship with my background, and how it is so heavily moulded and formed by my parents.
Like so many second-generation immigrants, I view my family’s homeland through rose-coloured glasses — I am aware that my version of country is a fantasy and does not exist in reality, yet I hold onto it and continuously search to recreate it nonetheless. My current focus is the realisation that perhaps I do not want to return to Lebanon, in unwillingness to disrupt this fantasy.
I’m interested in capturing my state of liminality; forever situated in between, longing juxtaposed with hesitance, distance and closeness, remembering and forgetting, connection and aversion.
In embracing the complexities and ever-contradicting nature of my emotions, I hope to use my practice as a means of documenting my journey of reconnection as something that never quite ends, forever unresolved, that I continue simply by existing.
