Documentation provided by West Space Gallery
"Portrait of Bisan Owda" is a piece made with the intention of centering and showcasing solidarity, tribute and kinship, and was apart of West Space's fundraiser, which was titled "Kin." When responding to the concept of "Kinship", I was drawn to Bisan as my subject matter, due to my personal connection with her. The connection between cultures and communities is one felt beyond borders — despite Bisan and I sharing a similar background but not the same blood, I still feel an intense personal sense of kinship.

With her work in the public eye reaching globally, there is a connection that is formed throughout countless types of people of all backgrounds that I wanted to live on and acknowledged in a space where community, solidarity and connection is centered. I painted this portrait with the intention of holding her memory, and acknowledging the beauty, diversity and richness of Levantine culture and community.
