“Roots” is a homage to heritage, my family tree, and intergenerational connection. Art practise, music making and creation as something that has been passed down— from my Jido to my Dad and to me. Music and art has always been something that has been engrained within me and my family line, and is a root I see extended from myself and those who came before me.

This installation is an ode and a homage, it’s personal and intimate and is my way of reflecting on how art is used within my culture so often as a means of responding.

Lebanon is a beautiful country that I have so many beautiful memories associated with, and one of those many memories is the power of the art it shares. Using art as a way to respond to what’s happening around you when words simply aren’t enough, and that is something I intend to continue on with my own practise.

The tree is created primarily by my Dad, who I could not be more thankful for. This sculpture was a way of collaborating on shared art making, and intergenerational art-making when responding to Lebanon. We wanted the culture, strength and resilience of Lebanese people to be centred, and nothing is a stronger symbol of that than the Cedar Tree. The significance of the tree in Lebanese culture, the values and morals that are rooted within Lebanese people, and the connection to nature and land. These are all these I considered when making this work.
